2023 – Newsletter Term 4

Farewell 2023…

Farewell 2023…2024, we see you in the distance…

It’s been a busy year, to say the least. From settling into our newly renovated building, launching new projects to expanding our team, we have accomplished so much. We have faced and overcome obstacles and we have learned valuable lessons along the way. We are SO grateful for the opportunities that this year has presented us.

To every donor, sponsor, partner and cheerleader – we appreciate your continued support. Together we will continue to change live through education.

We cannot say THANK YOU enough to VisionBox for the amazing work that they do through the VisionBox Foundation. 16 of our Grade R learners and 6 of our high school learners received free eye tests and prescription glasses.

One of our Grade R learner’s responses when receiving her glasses: “This is better, everything is so shiny.” 😊

We are also so grateful to Miss Casey and Miss Confidence from The Learning Initiative. Partnering with this amazing organisation has been a true game changer for our Grade R learners’ school readiness.

Take a look at some of our Term 4 highlights that took place across our 4 programmes…

Pre-Primary School

Over and above the extra 60 learners that we got to impact this year, we had lots more to celebrate…

Teacher Thuli’s graduation.

Our Bridgitte and her new bundle of joy.

Our October, November and December birthdays.

Enriching the learning experience with a visit from Giraffe House.

Our Grade R Graduation Ceremony and Concert was an absolute blast and many happy and fun memories were made.

A special Christmas party and presents for every child was a wonderful way to end off the year!

Literacy Centre

Our amazing Literacy Centre volunteers and the learners gave it their all this year. Assessments showed that our Grade 2’s improved by 34% and our Grade 3’s improved by 45%.

Everyone had fun at our Literacy Centre Graduation. Hats off to our incredible graduates and a shoutout to our awesome volunteers.

We ended the year with a Literacy Centre Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast to say thank you to all of our incredible volunteers.

Teacher Mentorship Programme

In addition to our CAPS in a SNAP resource available to the Foundation Phase at Fisantekraal Primary School, phonics was a main focus for this year. At the end of term 4, we completed a phonics assessment on the Foundation Phase learners. We have been pleasantly surprised with the results so far. Well done to the teachers for implementing the teaching techniques. It is always exciting to note that by investing time, efforts and resources into the 15 teachers in the phase, we are extending our reach to nearly 600 learners in their care.

Teamwork makes the dream work and we celebrated with tea and cake to celebrate together.

High School Programme

We started the term with a study skills workshop. We also held workshops on the importance of healthy role models.

We end 2023 feeling encouraged. It has been a full year of hard work. We are so pleased to see an improvement on many of the reports of learners attending our Education Centre. Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who support our High School learners with their homework, projects, tutoring and love!

As the saying goes…work hard, so you can play hard. We celebrated a busy year and the end of exams with a party full of food, sweets, gifts and a special performance from our very own Rhaz! Thank you to everyone who contributed!
