This term, we launched our Sponsor a Child campaign for our 120 Early Learning Centre children and our 100 Literacy Centre learners. The campaign has been a great success thus far! With our campaign coming to a close next week, there are still a few learners in need of sponsorship. Early Learning Centre sponsorships are R375 a month and Literacy Centre sponsorships are R220 a month, for a period of 12 months each. Early Learning Centre
It has been such a joy to see how quickly our new Grade R children have settled into their first year of “big school”. This term, our Valentines’ Fun Day was a day of balloons, hearts, bubbles and ice-cream – a welcome relief from a very hot summer’s day. The children loved every minute celebrating! The Won Life Family Sports Day was a firm favourite, as always! Brand new developmental activities for the children, an inflatable and a Parents’ Race contributed to a day of great fun for everyone! Delicious hot dogs at the end of the morning hit the spot, ending off an unforgettable day.
Teacher Mentorship Programme
This year, we have extended our programme to include Grade 4 teachers at Trevor Manuel Primary. This means that we have been able to provide ongoing support as learners move from the Foundation into the Intermediate Phases. Our main focus this term has been on English as a First Additional Language in order to strengthen this key learning area and support Xhosa learners whose language of learning changes from Xhosa to English in Grade 4. We have provided the teachers with print rich materials, English readers and resources to enhance their learning environments and ended the term off with a connection tea with the Grade 4 team.
The Literacy Centre kicked of the first term of the year with 68 volunteers and 100 children attending sessions each week, which is up from the 92 learners on the programme last year. We launched into the year with a focus on Phonics for our Grade 2 learners and had some fun with Silly Rhymes with our Grade 3s. We sowed into our volunteers with programme-specific training hosted by Sharleen Haupt from Shine Literacy, as well as Michelle Bruyns from Won Life, while also welcoming 5 new volunteers to our family. If you would like to volunteer at our Literacy Centre, please contact us on az.gr1563463047o.efi1563463047lnow@1563463047ofni1563463047.
High School Programme
We had a great term working alongside our teens at the Won Life Education Centre. In setting the tone for the year we discussed how and why goals are important, as well as how to plot goals effectively. An emphasis was placed on developing a fresh culture where learning is a value. We have already seen a positive shift take place in terms of number of teens attending our sessions each day. Chantel Streicher conducted a Comprehension Skills workshop which was delivered both in theoretical and practical manner. We finished off our term with a boerewors braai which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
